What is Benign Prostate Hypertrophy(BHP)?
The prostate is a small walnut sized male gland located internally near the opening of the bladder (i.e. the place where urine is stored) It surrounds the urethra (i.e the tube that carries urine to the exterior from the bladder). The prostate secretes a fluid (to ultimately form semen), which mixes with the secretion of the testes.
As men age, the prostate gland enlarges. Hypertrophy is an abnormal increase in the size of the prostate gland. When this happens, the urethra or the passage tube gets compressed and the individual finds it difficult to pass urine, or in other words there is interference in the normal flow of urine.
The word benign means the enlargement isn’t caused by cancer or infection. Hypertrophy means enlargement.
