How do I know I have Benign Prostate Hypertrophy(BHP)?
It is important you consult your doctor to confirm if you are suffering from BHP.
A complete history of your symptoms is important.
- Digital Rectal Examination - This examination is usually done first, it involves inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum. This gives the doctor and idea about the size and condition of the prostate gland.
- Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test - Prostate specific antigen is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. It is normal for men to have low levels of PSA in their blood. Most doctors consider PSA values of below 4.0ng/ml as normal. This test is mostly done to make sure that the prostate problem is benign.
- Ultrasound - This is a non invasive procedure, used to estimate the size of the prostate gland. It can also help detect problems such as kidney obstruction, stones in kidney or prostate, or a tumor in the prostate.
- Urine Flow Study - The patient will be asked to urinate into a special device that measures how quickly the urine is flowing. A reduced flow of urine often suggests BHP.
- Cyctoscopy - This is a specialized tube, known as cystoscope which is inserted into the opening of the urethra in the penis. The lens and the light of the cystoscope help the doctor see inside of the urethra and bladder. It helps to determine the size of the gland, and identify the location and the degree of obstruction.
