How do I deal (or live) with Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BHP)?

Here are some tips on dealing with BHP
  1. Avoid drinking a lot of water before bedtime. (2-3 hours before going to bed). This will prevent nocturnal awakenings to pass urine.
  2. Be patient when emptying your bladder, wait a while till the final dribble.
  3. Make sure you visit the toilet with every urge.
  4. Avoid caffeine before bedtime, it makes the symptoms worse.
  5. Avoid alcohol.
  6. Antihistamines and decongestants (cold medicines) tend to make symptoms worse.
  7. Exercise regularly and keep positive, it is curable.
Typical complications that can arise during treatment of BHP are -
  1. Urinary tract infections and stones in the tract. The patient may present with pain whilst urinating, or even blood in the urine.
  2. Swelling of the kidneys due to buildup of back pressure in the urinary system. This condition is termed as hydronephrosis.
  3. Sudden inability to urinate. Complete stoppage of flow of urine.
You must visit your doctor if -
  1. You develop fever with chills and rigor; it could be a signal of potential infective involvement of the kidneys.
  2. The presence of blood or pus in the urine.
  3. The presence of back pain, radiating pain in the back, or flank pain. The pain associated with kidney stones can be particularly excruciating.
  4. The sudden inability to pass urine associated with pain (acute retention of urine).
