How do I deal (or live) with Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BHP)?
Here are some tips on dealing with BHP
- Avoid drinking a lot of water before bedtime. (2-3 hours before going to bed). This will prevent nocturnal awakenings to pass urine.
- Be patient when emptying your bladder, wait a while till the final dribble.
- Make sure you visit the toilet with every urge.
- Avoid caffeine before bedtime, it makes the symptoms worse.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Antihistamines and decongestants (cold medicines) tend to make symptoms worse.
- Exercise regularly and keep positive, it is curable.
- Urinary tract infections and stones in the tract. The patient may present with pain whilst urinating, or even blood in the urine.
- Swelling of the kidneys due to buildup of back pressure in the urinary system. This condition is termed as hydronephrosis.
- Sudden inability to urinate. Complete stoppage of flow of urine.
- You develop fever with chills and rigor; it could be a signal of potential infective involvement of the kidneys.
- The presence of blood or pus in the urine.
- The presence of back pain, radiating pain in the back, or flank pain. The pain associated with kidney stones can be particularly excruciating.
- The sudden inability to pass urine associated with pain (acute retention of urine).
